Interview with Mikkel Gaup who has one of the main parts in The Kautokeino Rebellion. He says that director Nils Gaup acted like an a** towards him during the shooting and he couldn`t understand why.
In addition to this the Sami actors were placed far away from the location so they had to get up at 5 am to get to the shooting in time. After a while they were moved to the set but still they were treated badly. It says that Mikael stayed at a hotell during the shooting.
What was worse was that they didn`t get any praise for their acting.
Nils Gaup did all this on purpose since he wanted the Sami actors to get a sense of what it was like for the Sami population at this time.

Anni-Kriistina Juuso who plays Elen in the movie can`t believe Mikkel Gaup`s harsh comments about Nils Gaup. She does feel that it was difficult to get feedback and get to know the director but she felt comfortable with this strategy.Juuso says she is a rather individualistic actress and so she doesn`t like it if directors meddle in everything.
Both Juuso and Inger Utsi denies that only certain actors were allowed to stay at a hotell during the shooting. They say the hotell was located too far from location. That`s why some actors chose to stay at barracks at location.
The producer Pål Røed says that the reason why actors are treated differently has to do with their work load. Also he mentions that actors like Mikael travels all over the Nordic countries working with different projects. And so they want a certain standard.Røed says he worked with Peter Stormare in the movie "Switch" and he lived under different conditions than the Norwegians.

Here`s the official site about the Kautokeino rebellion. It`s referred to on Mikael`s official site.
The director Nils Gaup is interviewed and he has some interesting comments. He says he isn`t as interested in the rebellion and the executions as in why it all happend. He says these things happen in today`s world as well, what makes suicide bombers, black widows and others we call terrorists act like they do?
He also states that there are no heroes in this story

Review of The Kautokeino Rebellion,it`s very positive
Elen (played by Anni-Kriistina Juuso)is the central person in the story since her son is told her version of the rebellion years later.About what it was like to se her husband and his dad disappear into the damnations of alcohol, whil their debt to the merchant Carl Johan Ruth (Mikael`s part)diminishes their herd of reindeer. You`re not supposed to talk back to the ones in power. And the powerful people have friends who help each other. You`re not supposed to talk loudly in church, apart from when you`re praying. And the minister can hide behind the words of God.

The reporter says Juuso is sincere and sensitive,a woman we can believe in.
She says about Mikael that it takes time to get used to his long, unruly hair and moustache. He empties his glasses and watches over his store with authority. But he doesn`t dominate the canvas when he`s in focus.Bjørn Sundqvist (a Norwegian actor)is everything from furious to fatherly mild to the personification of arrogance.Michael Nyqvist is the preacher Læastadius. We meet him only once, but Gaup`s lightning is something we remember.
The emphasis is on the social conditions,it`s given attention in a low key way and we`re safely led through the story.
The movie is visually very beautiful, the scenery is perfect for creating poetry.Mari Boine`s music follows us like an extra pulse.

Another very positive review of The Kautokeino Rebellion
It`s a powerful movie, the reporter says that Elen faces a lot of adversaries when trying to save her family`s livelihood.First it`s the booze and its demons through her husband. Then the struggle continues with the powerful merchant in Kautokeino.
The movie opens with pictures from the last scene, wich makes you understand the seriousness of it.The actors does a great job in getting the message through. The reporter says you can`t avoid crying at the end,us women need a waterproof mascara and a handkerchief.

This critic is positive, but feels Gaup could`ve taken it even further. On the other hand he says it`s a powerful and thought provoking movie. He says the story is thrilling and the subject unfortunately is ever present since discrimination still exists and the use of keeping people in custody is dubious.
Anni-Kriistina Juuso is believable as Elen and Bjørn Sundqvist seems to have a great time creating a real bastard of a minister.

Nils Gaup says he started out with a story with clear heroes, but he ended up with no heroes at all.
His reasons for wanting to make this movie is that he wanted to present his version of a story that`s been held a secret both on the Norwegian and Sami side.He says it made him curious and that he like Bergman who went to his own universe to try to understand the big issues,it`s the same with him.Gaup wants to learn the small universe to understand more of the big world.
He also says it`s been a huge job to make eight years of events and a complicated story into less than two hours. He says it`s much harder to simplify rather than to create complicated things. He does want ordinary people of today to understand it.
Gaup says there are noe message in this story. He considers it more like a research project into understanding why irrational things happen."Why does people do things that has such huge consequences for themselves and their culture.I don`t believe in a standard answer when it comes to human beings. But I feel I have gotten closer to understanding why these things happen".

Verdens Gang gives the movie a rave review calling it "fantastically powerful, wise, emotional and richly composed story of a central Sami and Norwegian trauma. This is big film art".
They say about Mikael that he is "a tad bit up and down as the merchant, the root of the evil. But invincible at his most intense".Anni-Kriistina Juuso is "phenomenal".Mikkel Gaup "fills his part with the weight of the ambivalence and action".Bjørn Sundqvist "is a well functioning and well prepared nightmare as the minister Stockfleth".
The one place where the movie fails is the portrayal of the preacher Lars Levi Lestadius(played by Michael Nyqvist). He is too weak and toned down, you never understand fully why this man could convert a whole region."

I went to se the Kautokeino rebellion yesterday and it was great. It`s a powerful, impressive, epic movie.
Mikael is great as the merchant Carl Johan Ruth.Even if his character is a bad guy,Björn Sundqvist is even worse. He plays a horrible minister.
Anni-Kristiina Juuso`s character Elen is a very brave,strong woman.
I can really recommend it and I hope you do get to see it.

I wonder if and when it will come to Sweden - does anyone know anything about that?
